Library Makeover Budget Info

In November, 2011, the Sunnyside community approved an $88 million dollar bond. These bond funds were designated by the vote for: $32 million in facilities renovation, $10 million in athletics upgrades, $27 million to sustain technology initiatives, $6 million for new buses, and $1 million for security upgrades.

The Library Renovations fell under 2 of these areas: Facilities Renovation and Technology Initiatives.

Our Library Executive Team and Director of IT determined that each site in the first phase of renovation would receive $250,000 to use for construction, furniture and technology. 3 sites were chosen: both high schools and the K-6 technology academy.  These were chosen as the pilot sites based on need and visibility. The remaining 17 schools will be modeled after these, with approximately 4 upgrades occurring per year.

New Carpet Please!

Once the old carpet started coming up in October, the students and staff FINALLY started to believe me – after a year of promises – I was not making it all up after all.  Because construction had to happen during the school year (contractor fell through in the summer), the students were able to witness the entire transformation.  We did our best to remain open as much as possible.  The day the carpet came up, though, none of us could stay.  So much dust!  Those strips of orange are what was left of the previous carpet…it had been hiding under the bookshelves. The last picture is the new flooring – we chose carpet tiles for easy cleaning and swapping.  Any heavy traffic areas can be swapped out as long as our store of replacement tiles lasts.

Los Amigos Technology Academy

Los Amigos Technology Academy, Sunnyside’s K-6 technology magnet, serves as a virtual literacy laboratory, with a 2 to 1 iPad ratio in kinder & 1st grade classrooms, and a 1 to 1 netbook/chromebook ratio in 2nd through 6th grades. However, books still matter, to both teachers and students, and circulation is up! The library program continues to promote and reinforce personal reading goals, albeit with a smaller, more vibrant collection; in addition to teaching and practicing digital media skills with the variety of devices on site. The library space is open all day, serving scheduled classes as well as staff PD trainings, small groups, tutors, and individuals. Mornings, the library space is packed with students reading/checking out books, doing pencil & paper homework, and reading/working/playing on laptops before the first bell.
